What Is Orientation?

The Orientation Program is required for all new freshmen; new freshmen are required to have completed ACT testing before arriving at EKU so that course placement and advising can be handled effectively. The program includes time to meet with academic advisors, register for classes, tour one of the residence halls and the campus in small groups, and gather information on campus activities and services. The Orientation Program also includes special sessions for parents and guests, to involve them in the process of helping their students succeed. Families are also invited to join the EKU Family Network.

At orientation, students receive a book to read in preparation for New Student Days which will be held a week prior to the beginning of fall classes. (The book selection will be interesting and will challenge new students to think critically, and hopefully, will inspire students to work toward academic achievement. This activity is important because it will give students an encounter with new academic processes. The book will be used for panel discussions, the author's lecture and other select activities when students return to campus for New Student Days).

Special Assistance

Parents, guests or students requiring special assistance or interpreters for the hearing-impaired should contact Ms. Teresa Belluscio, Coordinator for the Disabilities Office, (859) 622-2933, at least one week prior to the event.

Important Placement Testing Information!

In order to be advised and register for classes, you must have ACT (or SAT) scores and placement tests (if required) on file. If you have an ACT score below 18 in reading, English, or mathematics, or a combined SAT score of less than 870 in mathematics and critical/verbal reading, you must take placement tests.

Placement testing is only offered on the orientation dates hightlighted in green. If you have to take placement tests and are signed up for an orientation session where testing is not offered, you must make arrangements to take the placement test(s) prior to your orinetation date. Click here for more testing information and dates.

EKU Developmental Education Program

The Developmental Education Program at Eastern Kentucky University helps students achieve academic success by developing or enhancing skill level proficiencies in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics needed for success in college-level courses. At EKU and other colleges and universities nationwide, students must demonstrate basic skill proficiencies in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics as determined by ACT or placement test scores. Since these proficiencies are determined through the ACT test, all students are responsible for having ACT scores and subscores on file at the University. Before confronting a rigorous academic program, students identified through testing as needing additional help in these basic skill areas are placed in developmental courses designed to improve their skills.

Students have the opportunity to take University Placement Tests to demonstrate basic skill proficiencies. To schedule placement tests please contact the Office of Academic Testing at 859-622-1281. Practice placement tests and testing opportunities are available at www.testing.eku.edu.

ACT Test

ACT scores and subscores provide essential information used during advising and registration. If you have not taken the ACT test, please contact ACT, your high school counselor, or the Office of Academic Testing about scheduling the test. When you take the test, please make sure that an official copy of your scores is sent to Eastern Kentucky University. If you cannot schedule the exam in your home community or you would like to retake the exam, EKU offers a Residual ACT exam. You may contact the EKU Office of Academic Testing (859-622-1281) to make arrangements to take the Residual ACT on the Eastern Kentucky University campus prior to orientation.

If you have taken the national ACT, you must make sure that the results have been reported to the Office of Admissions at Eastern Kentucky University.
